50th Anniversary Reunification Day: Unique Experience in Vietnam

I am Huynh, the podcast production assistant at Seven Million Bikes Podcasts, and we’ve been working together for 2 years.

As a Vietnamese, I am eager to share these moments with you, especially foreigners or expats living in Vietnam so as to spread our patriotism, pride and help you understand more about our heroic history.
This year, Vietnam proudly marks the 50th Anniversary of Reunification Day — a milestone that reminds us of the incredible journey toward peace, unity, and national pride.
I was so excited to see Niall’s videos and his experiences at the practice parade, and it inspired me to record my own unforgettable moments during this historic celebration.

 50th Anniversary Reunification Day

Reunification Day, celebrated every year on April 30th, commemorates the end of the Vietnam War in 1975 and the reunification of North and South Vietnam. It’s a day of remembrance, gratitude, and celebration across the country, reflecting on how far Vietnam has come over the past five decades.

For the 50th anniversary, celebrations are even more vibrant. Major cities like Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Da Nang are hosting grand parades, art exhibitions, fireworks shows, and cultural performances. Many places are decorated with flags, banners, and flowers, creating a truly festive atmosphere.

Special Events for the 50th Anniversary of Reunification Day

This year’s 50th anniversary of Reunification Day is celebrated on an even larger scale, with a wide range of meaningful events across Ho Chi Minh City and the country. Here are some highlights:

  • Grand Parade and Marching Program

The centerpiece of the celebration will be the national-level commemorative ceremony and a grand parade starting at 6:30 a.m. on April 30 along Lê Duẩn Street and other central areas in District 1.

Organized by the Ministry of National Defence, the parade will feature 36 military parade units, 12 civilian marching groups, and special ceremonial formations.

Military delegations from Laos, Cambodia, and China will also participate, showing strong international support for Vietnam’s historic day.

  • Helicopter Flyover

Spectacular helicopter displays featuring 10 Mi-8 and Mi-17 helicopters carrying the national and party flags will soar across the sky, adding a majestic touch to the festivities.

  • Cannon Salute at Bach Dang Wharf

A ceremonial cannon firing was rehearsed by the 96th Brigade, featuring 15 105-mm cannons arranged along the Saigon River at Bach Dang Wharf. The thunderous sound of the cannons created a solemn and proud atmosphere that drew crowds of both locals and tourists.

  • Drone and Fireworks Show

On April 19, 26, and 30, a dazzling aerial show featuring 2,000 drones combined with a fireworks display will light up the city’s skyline — a first-of-its-kind event in Ho Chi Minh City.

The night sky was filled with lights, shapes, and colors dancing to music. It wasn’t just a fireworks show — it felt like a huge, emotional celebration of everything Vietnam has overcome and achieved.

Watching The Parade Rehearsal: One Of The Most Unique Experiences

Watching Niall’s video on this historic day was an emotional and inspiring experience. Everywhere I went, I could feel the pride and excitement of the people. Seeing veterans, families, and young generations come together to celebrate made me appreciate even more the meaning behind Reunification Day.

It wasn’t just the official events that made the day special — it was the feeling of unity among everyone around me. Young, old, locals, tourists — everyone stood side by side, smiling, cheering, and celebrating a shared history.

The parade itself was breathtaking. Military units marched with discipline and strength, while helicopters flew overhead carrying the national and Party flags. Veterans rode by in decorated vehicles, reminding everyone of the sacrifices made for the country’s independence and reunification.

The parade was surrounded by a sea of people — young and old — all wearing red T-shirts with the national flag proudly displayed on their chests. Flags waved high above our heads, and in that moment, it felt like all generations had become one, united as Vietnamese.

The streets were filled with the sounds of classic Vietnamese revolutionary songs, the same ones sung during the war years. It was powerful to hear those melodies again, especially on such a historic day.

It reminded me of the energy I once felt during “Đi Bão” celebrations, but this time it carried a deeper, more emotional meaning.

Everyone left with a heart full of pride and a mind more connected to Vietnam’s incredible journey through history.

Conclusion

Experiencing the 50th Anniversary Reunification Day parade was truly special. It wasn’t just about witnessing a grand celebration — it was about feeling the spirit of a nation that has endured, grown, and stayed united through history.
